Hex Bolt ISO 4014
DIN 931 is an internationally recognized standard for partially threaded hex head bolts. Its core distinction from fully threaded bolts lies in the division of its shank into a smooth, unthreaded section and a threaded tightening section—a design that grants it specialized mechanical applications.
Material and Strength
Manufacturing materials primarily fall into two categories:
Carbon Steel: Graded according to performance requirements, with common grades including 8.8 and 10.9. These numbers denote tensile strength and the ratio of yield strength to ultimate tensile strength; higher values indicate greater bolt strength and load-bearing capacity.
Stainless Steel: Primarily A2 (304 stainless steel) and A4 (316 stainless steel), where the subsequent number (e.g., "70") indicates tensile strength. Stainless steel provides superior corrosion resistance.
Surface Treatment (Coatings)
To withstand diverse environments, carbon steel bolts receive various coatings:
Electrogalvanized
Most common, low-cost, available in silver-white, colored finishes, etc.
Phosphating
Often used for subsequent oiling or integration with paint systems.
Dacromet
Provides superior rust protection compared to electrogalvanizing.
Hot-dip galvanizing
Features a thicker zinc layer, suitable for coastal environments, though the surface finish may be less uniform.
Primary Applications
Due to its smooth shank section achieving a tight fit with mating holes, DIN 931 is particularly suitable for structural connections requiring shear force resistance and precise positioning. When components experience lateral loads or vibration, the smooth shank effectively prevents wear-induced clearance between the bolt shank and hole walls.
